The Banquet of the Chestnuts is an event said to have taken place in 1501 during the papacy of Alexander VI, who was a member of the notorious Borgia family. The event was documented by Johann Burchard, the master of ceremonies for the papal court.
According to Burchard, Cesare Borgia, the Pope’s son, hosted a lavish banquet in the Papal Palace. The guests allegedly included fifty courtesans or prostitutes who, after dinner, were invited to entertain the guests with lascivious dances and games, with the night culminating in a sexual orgy. Chestnuts were strewn on the floor, and the courtesans had to pick them up, supposedly leading to the event’s name.
The banquet is often used as an example of the debauchery and corruption that characterized the Borgia papacy. However, given the scandalous nature of the event and the political climate of the time, some historians question the accuracy of Burchard’s account and suggest it might have been exaggerated or even fabricated. Despite this controversy, the Banquet of the Chestnuts has been immortalized in literature and art, including Heinrich Lossow’s painting “The Sin.”
